GALLERY crossing

岐阜県美濃加茂市の中山道沿いにGALLERY crossingは、工芸やアートを取り扱うギャラリーとして、5年ほど前に中山道沿いにオープンした。本プロジェクトはGALLERY crossingの移転リニューアルプロジェクトである。今回の移転先は移転する前の店舗から徒歩30秒の場所にある。この建物はGALLERY crossingのオーナーが解体するという話を近隣の住民から聞き、交渉の末この建物を譲り受ける形でプロジェクトがスタートした。当初のプランは建物の改装に利用できる美濃加茂市の補助金を申請し、メイン工事となる外壁や入口扉などを補助金に適応する仕様にして進めていたが、内外装の工事面積が大きくなるにつれて、工事費がかさんでいった。オーナーは補助金申請をする意味を考え、プランを再考していた。オーナーがディレクターとしてNOTA&designの加藤駿介さんに相談し、店舗設計としてTABの横山、河合が参加しプロジェクトを仕切り直すこととなった。プランを進めていく中で、この建物は以前「朝日屋」という名前で食堂として営業されており、当時から町の人々に親しまれていたことや、大通りからの交差点の角に位置するので中山道の目印となっていることから、この建物は中山道の風景として町の人々の風景に刻まれていると判断し、この建物の外観を極力変えずに街に残す方向で計画を進めていくことにした。計画としては建物の東側の道からメインのギャラリースペースAを眺めることができるように大きな窓を二つ設け、その隣に入口扉を設けた。2つの窓と入口扉のある外壁の箇所のみを施工し、外観の工事を少なくした。元々の外観に使用されていたモルタル金鏝の壁と同じ仕様とすることで色味のトーンを合わせた。

入口扉はGLから600ｍｍのところに設け、そこから内部へ入ると1ＦＬから+450㎜高い位置になる。エントランススペースからギャラリースペースＡとギャラリースペースＢを俯瞰し、そこから階段を降りてそれぞれのスペースに向かうことができる。ギャラリースペースAは外部をつなぐ、大きな二つの窓から外を眺めることができ、一部天井を高くして光幕天井を設置し、上部からの自然光に近い柔らかな光が設置された作品を照らすようにしている。今後は絵画などの展示を行っていくため、天井高さを確保し作品を集中して吟味してもらう空間にしている。

ギャラリースペースBは壁に囲まれた空間とし、スポットライトで個々の作品を照らす空間としている。またプロジェクターを使用した映像作品の展示などを行えるようにしている。ギャラリースペースAとBはオープンとクローズのような対照的な空間とし、スペースを使用する作家が展示の幅を広げることができるようにしている。今後も様々なジャンルのアーティストによって空間が使用され、展示されていくことを期待している。改装工事が終わり、移転オープンした後、近隣の人々からはこの建物を残したことに対する良い反応があり、また市からも好意的な反応を頂いている。

GALLERY crossing opened along Nakasendo Road in Minokamo City, Gifu Prefecture, about five years ago as a gallery dealing with crafts and art. This project is a relocation and renewal project of GALLERY crossing. The new location is a 30 second walk from the previous location. The project started when we heard from a neighbor that the owner of GALLERY crossing was going to demolish the building, and after negotiations, we took over the building. The initial plan was to apply for a Minokamo City subsidy that could be used to renovate the building, and the main construction work, such as the exterior walls and entrance door, was carried out according to the specifications for the subsidy, but as the interior and exterior construction area became larger, the construction costs increased. The owner was reconsidering the plan, considering the meaning of applying for the subsidy. The owner consulted with Shunsuke Kato of NOTA&design as director, and Yokoyama and Kawai of TAB joined as store designers to rework the project. In the course of the planning process, it was determined that this building had previously operated as a diner under the name “Asahiya” and had been familiar to the townspeople since that time, and that it was located at the corner of an intersection from the main street, making it a landmark on Nakasendo Road, and that this building was etched in the scenery of the townspeople as a scene from Nakasendo Road. Therefore, we decided to proceed with the plan in the direction of preserving the exterior of this building in the town without changing it as much as possible. The plan was to install two large windows and an entrance door next to them so that the main gallery space A could be viewed from the street on the east side of the building. The color tones were matched by using the same specifications as the mortar-gilded trowel walls used on the original exterior.

The entrance door was installed at 600mm from the GL, and from there the entrance into the interior is +450mm higher than the 1FL. From the entrance space, one has a bird’s eye view of Gallery Space A and Gallery Space B, from where one can descend the stairs to the respective spaces. Gallery Space A has two large windows that connect to the exterior and allow visitors to look out. The ceiling has been partially raised and a light curtain ceiling has been installed so that soft, almost natural light from above illuminates the installed works. In order to exhibit paintings and other works in the future, the ceiling height has been secured to provide a space where visitors can concentrate on examining the works.

Gallery Space B is a space surrounded by walls, with spotlights illuminating individual works. It is also possible to exhibit video works using a projector. Gallery spaces A and B are contrasting spaces, open and closed, to allow the artists who use the spaces to expand the range of their exhibitions. We expect that the space will continue to be used and exhibited by artists of various genres. After the renovation work was completed and the building was relocated and opened, the neighborhood has responded positively to the decision to keep the building, and the city has also responded favorably.
